What the evidence tells us
A 2024 academic study of tested LG and Samsung TVs found that automatic content recognition (ACR) can identify viewing activity, including when a TV is used as an HDMI display. In those tests, opting out stopped traffic to ACR servers. Results depend on the model, region, and settings; this is not proof that every current TV behaves identically.
Separately, Bitdefender disclosed vulnerabilities in tested webOS 4–7 devices in April 2024 and reported a March 22, 2024 patch release. These are historical findings, not evidence of a new unpatched flaw or a breach at your organization.
What remains unverified
This advisory does not establish claims about continuous microphone recording or broad local-network scanning. Device discovery, advertising data collection, and a security compromise are different behaviours. The specific report, model, firmware, settings, and vendor response need review before making stronger claims.
A proportionate workplace review
Ginga’s review can document the display’s purpose and location, confirm vendor updates, and assess optional viewing-data, advertising, and voice features. In rooms used for confidential discussions or sensitive screen sharing, the review should also consider whether a network connection or smart features are needed at all.
Network isolation can limit access to business systems, but it does not by itself stop a TV sending data to internet services. Privacy settings and permitted internet access need separate consideration. Avoid changing shared displays during business operations without an agreed plan.
